The following steps are recommended to help ensure safety and reliability during the upcoming winter months:

Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. Flushing the cooling system should be done every two years.
Ensure your heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Replace your wiper blades every 6 months.
Check your battery. Cold temperatures increase the battery workload and can take a toll.
Check tire tread and pressure. Tire pressure should be checked once a month to avoid reduction in gripping. Don’t forget to check the spare tire as well.
Change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles.
If you are due for a tune-up, get it done before winter sets in.
Have your brake pads and shoes professionally inspected. The braking system is the most important safety item.
Check exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks.
Make sure interior and exterior lights are in working condition and headlights are properly aimed.
Keep your gas tank at least half full to reduce moisture problems in the fuel system.
Check belts for cracks or frayed edges. Follow the owner’s manual for preventive maintenance.
Replace worn or misfiring spark plugs.
Have an emergency kit on hand that includes scraper, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothing, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks, and needed medication.
