Put Parking Lot Safety into Drive!
Minimize Your Organization’s Risk
The work/school day has ended. You pack up your belongings and head
out to your vehicle for the drive home. Your mind is sorting through a
million things. You are not paying attention to your surroundings and
are forgetting about your personal safety. It is an organization’s responsibility
to provide a safe parking lot and protection as employees/students go to
and from their vehicles.
Follow these safety tips to avoid pitfalls in your parking lot:
Keep parking lots free of potholes, cracks, unclear markings
and signs, broken bottles and other debris.
Walkways and fire lanes should be clearly marked.
Lighting is the most important security precaution for deterring
crime. Lights at entrances and exits should be at 20 foot levels.
Provide security officers to patrol and assist employees/students.
Install emergency telephones, security gates and fences
As an employee/student, it is your responsibility to take the
following precautionary measures:
Park near other cars and under lights.
Have your keys ready as you approach your vehicle.
Lock your doors immediately upon entry and leave promptly.
Drive safely in the parking lot by sounding your horn when
backing up, watching for pedestrians and avoid cutting through
empty parking spaces and lanes.
Follow pavement directional arrows, crosswalk markings and
posted speed limits.
Educate your employees/students about parking lot safety by distributing newsletters, safety handbooks and conducting safety meetings. Follow these safety tips to minimize your organization’s risk by providing a safer and more secure environment.
