The following steps are recommended to help ensure safety and reliability during the upcoming winter months:
    • Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. Flushing the cooling system should be done every two years.
    • Ensure your heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Replace your wiper blades every 6 months.
    • Check your battery. Cold temperatures increase the battery workload and can take a toll.
    • Check tire tread and pressure. Tire pressure should be checked once a month to avoid reduction in gripping. Don’t forget to check the spare tire as well.
    • Change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles.
    • If you are due for a tune-up, get it done before winter sets in.
    • Have your brake pads and shoes professionally inspected. The braking system is the most important safety item.
    • Check exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks.
    • Make sure interior and exterior lights are in working condition and headlights are properly aimed.
    • Keep your gas tank at least half full to reduce moisture problems in the fuel system.
    • Check belts for cracks or frayed edges. Follow the owner’s manual for preventive maintenance.
    • Replace worn or misfiring spark plugs.
    • Have an emergency kit on hand that includes scraper, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothing, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks, and needed medication.
