As we all know, crisis or disaster can strike with little or no warning. It is possible to assess your organization’s “potential” for disaster by conducting a proper “threat assessment.” Basically, you need to know what threats exist beyond your property lines. You don’t want to find out, for example, in the midst of a hazardous materials incident that includes a mandatory evacuation of one of your facilities that a chemical plant is located three quarters of a mile away and is on fire. The number of potential threats that may be located near your operation may be more than meets the eye.
We recommend that your organization conducts a thorough Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA) to determine what type of threats may exist near your facilities. Things like local swimming pools, industrial parks, highways, railroads, gas stations, proximity to dams, military bases and other seemingly non-threatening buildings and landmarks can pose a significant threat when a fire, some type of accident or act of terrorism occurs. Reduce your vulnerability by knowing what specific threats may be out there.
Bonus Tip: Be sure to work closely with your local emergency responders including the fire department, police department and county emergency managers to help you determine what local and regional threats may impact your operation during a crisis or disaster scenario.
