National Preparedness Month – Are You Prepared for a Power Outage?
A brief power outage might mean that you have to depend upon a flashlight to find your way to the bathroom at night and throw out the milk that spoiled in the refrigerator. It's an event that is annoying and inconvenient, but readily endurable, since after all, you know the electricity is coming back in a few hours. A prolonged, massive failure of the electrical grid, in contrast, could be a dire, life-threatening situation. While the odds of a long-term, nationwide blackout are remote, experts advise taking steps to prepare for a number of disaster scenarios that might leave you without power for an extended period of time.
