When you hear the words, “sharing the road”, what immediately comes to mind are cars, trucks and SUV’s. However, there are other means of transportation with which motorists’ share the road that require extra consideration and precaution. Learning the needs of motorists you come in contact with while driving will make the roads a safer place for everyone.
Whether it’s a young driver or an elderly driver you share the road with, each age group presents challenges of its own. The safest drivers on the road are the elderly. Statistics show that although they are the safest drivers, hearing loss, slower reflexes and medication can slow reaction time and impair their driving ability. Use caution when sharing the road with new and inexperienced drivers. We have all seen the driver’s education vehicles on the roadways and highways. It is a very anxious time for the new and inexperienced driver. Lack of experience leads to wrong decisions. Think back to when you first learned how to drive. Make it a good experience. Allow them an extra margin of error as you drive.
Always use a seat belt and buckle up. And remember we’re not alone on the roads!
