What Type of Investor Are You?
Does the thought of planning for your retirement make you cringe or are you someone who enjoys it? When it comes to investing for retirement, styles can differ. But what’s most important to remember is that-no matter what your style-you can prepare for retirement successfully!
Discover Your Style
Taking a closer look at your attitudes toward retirement planning can help you become a better investor. To help you learn more about your personal style, Vanguard has developed a short questionnaire, which is available online at www.vanguard.com. The questionnaire results will tell you if you are a “planner,” a “doer,” or an “avoider” and will offer you some practical tips you can use whatever your style. The following is a brief overview of the three main styles.
Planner. If you enjoy planning for retirement, then you are most likely a “successful planner” or an “up-and-coming planner.” The main difference between the two groups is that successful planners are more optimistic about being financially prepared for retirement. Up-and-coming planners are on their way to becoming successful planners but are not yet in a position to meet their retirement goals.
Doer. If you are a saver who doesn’t particularly enjoy planning and managing your money, you are probably a “secure doer.” Secure doers are more optimistic about reaching their retirement savings goals than planners but less likely to seek financial planning assistance.
Avoider. If neither of the previous profiles sounds like you, you may be an “avoider.” There are two types of avoiders: “stressed avoiders” and “live-for-today avoiders.”
Stressed avoiders find finances confusing and stressful. They tend to be more pessimistic about having enough money for retirement, but they are interested in becoming more informed.
Live-for-today avoiders concentrate more on today than the future. Live-for-today avoiders have the highest confidence in Social Security and are less likely to participate in their employer’s retirement plan and relatively unconcerned about this decision.
